N.S.S

NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME (N.S.S.) :
The National Service Scheme has been introduced from the session 1986-87 in Kishorenagar College, Kishorenagar, Cuttack. Its motto is NOT ME, BUT YOU.

AIMS OF THE N.S.S. :
  • To promote national and social consciousness and a sense of social responsibility.
  • To inculcate a sense of dignity of labour among the students.
  • To inculcate a sense of discipline.
  • To acquaint the student community with the problems, challenges and the conditions of the society in which they live.
  • To arouse the social conscience, develop a sense of involvement and provide them with the opportunity to work with people them with the opportunity to work with people around the educational campus for creative and constructive social activities.


  • ENROLMENT : Two N.S.S. Units, one for Men Students and one for Women Students, with a capacity for enrolment of 50 students function in this college under the National Service Scheme of the Utkal University. Enrolment of volunteers is done at the beginning of the academic session. Any student of the college with an aptitude for social service is eligible to apply for enrolment as an N.S.S. Volunteer.
    A member of the teaching staff acts as the programme officer for each of the two units.

    PROGRAMME OF WORK :
    In order to achieve the aims, the N.S.S. Units usually undertake the following Programmes:-
  • Initiating literacy programmes and organising literacy centres.
  • Eradication of social evils like intoxication, caste feeling, dowry, illiteracy, home violence against women, bonded labour etc.
  • Planning for better environment.
  • Construction and repair of roads and drains.
  • Plantation, preservation and up-keeping of trees
  • Family and child care.
  • Blood donation.
  • Organisation of Red Cross activities like imparting First Aid training.
  • Relief work at the time of natural calamities.
  • Social service during festivals and fairs.
  • Organisation of social service camps in villages - digging of tanks, ponds, wells etc. and cleaning of ponds, tanks, villages etc.
  • Preservation and beautification of college campus.
  • Social forestry
  • Adult Education
  • Sanitation
  • Awareness of child labour & bonded labour.


  • N.S.S. CAMPS :
    N. S. S. Camps may be held weekly or for the duration of 10 days during vacations and holidays. These may be of inter college - wise, Inter University- wise, State -wise and Inter State- wise apart from a few special camps. 50% of the student volunteers may be selected to attend camps. Their expenses in the camp will be met by the funds available from the University. Certificates of participation at camps are issued to N.S.S. volunteers. Detailed information regarding N.S.S. Programmes may be obtained from the Programme Officer.

    FUNDS :
    University gives substantial grants for N.S.S. Programmes.

    YOUTH RED CROSS (Y.R.C) :
    The Youth Red Cross Unit has been functioning since 2000 in the College. It is affiliated to the Red Cross society of Odisha. It functions under the stewardship and supervision of a member of teaching staff called as the counsellor who is nominated by the Principal. The counsellor selects a group of volunteers interested to work from among the students who shall organise blood donation camps, first Aid Training, St. John Ambulance training and motivate the students to render help to the poor and needy during natural calamities.

    OBJECTIVES :
    Youth Red Cross is organised for the purpose of inculcating in the children of the country, the ideal of peace and the practice of service, especially in relation to the case of their own health and that of other, the understanding and acceptance of civic and human responsibility and the cultivation and maintenance of a spirit of friendly helpfulness towards other children in all countries.

    AIMS :
    The following are the aims of a Youth Red Cross:-
  • The promotion of health.
  • To render Service to the sick and suffering.
  • To Promote International friendliness.


  • FEES :
    Rs.10/- is to be collected from all the students at the time of admission. Out of the total collection 20% will be sent as state share and the residual amount will be deposited in a Nationalised Bank for operation of funds of the Youth Red Cross. The Principal of the college may operate the account with the assistance of the Counsellor.

    ACTIVITIES :
    The activities of the Y.R.C. Group can be summarised as follows:-
  • Practice of health habits.
  • To undergo St.John’s Ambulance Course in First Aid.
  • College hygiene.
  • Community hygiene.
  • Service to sick and suffering.
  • Voluntary Blood Donation Camp.
  • Organising Red Cross Voluntary Camp.
  • Home Service Welfare Work.
